Students’ Week 2026: Dominican University Students Celebrate Excellence, Culture, Sports, and Innovation
Dominican
University, Ibadan, once again demonstrated its commitment to holistic
education through the successful hosting of Students’ Week 2026, themed “The
Trailblazers.” The week-long celebration, held from 10th to 17th May
2026, brought together students, staff, alumni, and guests for a dynamic
series of academic, cultural, sporting, entrepreneurial, and social events.
As

leadership development, cultural appreciation, and community engagement beyond

Opening
Mass Marked the Beginning of Students’ Week 2026
The
celebration officially commenced on Sunday, 10th May 2026, with an
Opening Mass held at the St. Thomas Aquinas Priory Chapel. The event
featured an inspiring address by the Students’ Council President, who
encouraged students to fully participate in the week's activities.
The
opening ceremony concluded with a memorable group photograph session involving
students and the University Chaplain, setting the tone for a week filled with
learning, fellowship, and celebration.
Honouring
Legacy and Promoting Student Wellness
On
Monday, 11th May 2026, students gathered for a solemn procession in
honour of the late Mrs. Mary Iyekekpolor. The reflective event included
prayers, hymns, candle-lighting, and moments of remembrance.
The
day also featured a comprehensive health awareness programme on asthma
management, where students received practical information on asthma
symptoms, prevention, and emergency response techniques. The initiative
reinforced Dominican University’s commitment to student health and wellbeing.
Inter-University
Debate Competition Showcases Academic Excellence
A
major highlight of Students’ Week was the Inter-University Debate
Competition, held on Tuesday, 12th May 2026, under the theme:
“Ethics,
Justice, and Human Progress.”
The
competition featured participants from:

- Augustine

- Lead
City University
The
debates challenged students to engage critically with contemporary societal
issues while demonstrating analytical thinking, public speaking, and teamwork
skills.
Dominican
University delivered an exceptional performance in the semi-finals against Augustine
University, earning a place in the final round.
The
final debate saw Dominican University face Lead City University on the motion:
“Justice
is impossible without equality.”
Although
Lead City University emerged victorious by a narrow margin, Dominican
University distinguished itself through outstanding eloquence, confidence,
logical reasoning, and intellectual engagement, reflecting the university’s
strong academic culture.
Garri
X Trade Fair Day Promotes Entrepreneurship and Student Creativity
The
university field transformed into a vibrant marketplace on Wednesday, 13th
May 2026, during the highly anticipated Garri X Trade Fair Day.

University advanced to the football finals after defeating Caleb University in

final match against Precious Cornerstone University was a thrilling contest
that remained level throughout regular and extra time. Following a tense
penalty shootout, Precious Cornerstone University secured victory after a
decisive missed penalty.
Despite
the result, Dominican University's team displayed remarkable resilience,
discipline, teamwork, and sportsmanship throughout the tournament.
Cultural
Day Celebrates Diversity and Heritage
The
celebration of culture took centre stage on Friday, 15th May 2026,
during Cultural Day, themed:
“Echoes
of Heritage”
Students
proudly showcased the rich cultural diversity represented within the university
