Communique of the International Interdisciplinary Biennial Conference

COMMUNIQUÉ INTRODUCTION

Is Africa merely a passive consumer in the Artificial Intelligence revolution, or is it actively shaping the global narrative on the human future?

While discussions on Artificial Intelligence (AI) are often driven by technological advancement, the more pressing question remains: How will AI shape humanity and the future of society?

In response to this concern, Dominican University Ibadan hosted its 1st International Interdisciplinary Biennial Conference from 6–7 May 2026 on the theme: “Artificial Intelligence and the Human Future: Ethics, Communication, and the Voices of Women and Youth at the Margins.” The conference brought together nearly 500 scholars, policymakers, technologists, communication experts, and civil society actors from across the globe.

Guided by the vision of the Convenor, the conference emphasised the need for a human-centred and ethically responsible approach to AI, particularly through the promotion of “Green AI” for a progressive, sustainable, and inclusive human future.

Participants stressed that Africa and the Global South must move from passive consumption to active contribution in AI research, innovation, governance, and policy development. The conference further affirmed that technological progress must uphold human dignity, social justice, accountability, and environmental responsibility.

Special attention was given to the inclusion of women, youth, and marginalised communities in AI discourse and policymaking, recognising that the future of AI must be participatory and inclusive.

The conference also underscored the importance of collaboration among universities, governments, technology industries, media organisations, religious institutions, and civil society in shaping AI for the service of humanity.

Ultimately, the conference reaffirmed that Artificial Intelligence should not merely create smarter machines, but contribute to a more humane, ethical, and sustainable future for all.
