ABOUT PHILOSOPHY AND RELIGIOUS STUDIES

Brief History of the Philosophy Programme

The Philosophy programme at Dominican University, Ibadan, began in the 2017/2018 academic session as one of the University’s foundational academic programmes. However, it inherits a rich legacy from the Philosophy programme of the Dominican Institute, which operated in affiliation with the University of Ibadan from 1994 to 2016.
The programme started on the 3rd of october, 2017 with 37 students and 7 academic staff. By the 2020/2021 academic session, enrolment had grown significantly to 118 students, supported by 13 staff members. The Department has continued to expand in both numbers and academic profile and is now home to over 30 distinguished academic staff, including at least 11 in the professorial cadre.
Our curriculum reflects a commitment to both academic excellence and societal relevance. It provides a firm grounding in the traditional branches of philosophy—including Metaphysics, Epistemology, Logic, Ethics, Aesthetics, Social and Political Philosophy—while also addressing contemporary philosophical concerns. Our pedagogical approach seeks to cultivate a holistic understanding of the human person in all dimensions: rational, ethical, social, political, and spiritual.
At its core, the Philosophy programme aims to foster rigorous intellectual formation, grounded in the Thomistic tradition yet open to interdisciplinary engagement. We are committed to forming individuals who can think deeply, act justly, and contribute meaningfully to society.
